Orthopedics Residency Program

The TEAM Orthopedic Residency Program represents the next phase of our mission to expand access to world-class specialty care in South Texas.


By training the next generation of orthopedic surgeons in a collaborative, community-focused environment, TEAM is addressing the region’s urgent need for advanced musculoskeletal care.

Our goal is to establish a sustainable, ACGME-accredited orthopedic residency that combines clinical excellence, innovative research opportunities, and a strong commitment to community service.


Graduates will leave prepared to deliver comprehensive orthopedic care to aging and underserved populations throughout South Texas.

Mission & Vision

Why This Program Matters

South Texas currently faces a critical shortage of orthopedic surgeons, leaving many patients without timely access to joint, bone, and spine care.


The TEAM Orthopedic Residency will train highly skilled physicians dedicated to filling this gap, ensuring that families across the region receive the orthopedic expertise they deserve.

South Texas urgently needs more orthopedic specialists to care for our growing and aging population. The TEAM Orthopedic Residency will train physicians who are not only technically excellent but deeply committed to serving this community.

Training Sites

The program will collaborate with community orthopedic surgeons, hospitals, and clinics across South Texas to provide diverse, hands-on clinical rotations.

These partnerships will give residents exposure to a wide variety of surgical cases and patient populations, preparing them for independent practice in both urban and rural settings.

Program Overview

  • Sponsoring Institution: Texas Institute of GME and Research (TIGMER)

  • Teaching Institution: Texas Educational Academic Medical Foundation (TEAM)

  • Program Duration: 5-year residency (PGY-2 through PGY-5) with a PGY-1 general surgery internship completed through partner institutions

  • Launch Timeline: Targeted for July 2027.

Residents will gain experience across the full spectrum of orthopedic subspecialties, including trauma, sports medicine, joint reconstruction, spine surgery, and pediatric orthopedics.
